Petticoat Creek Cove Remediation August 2003Tidal Cove Remediation/Wetlands Restoration
Project In August of 2003 Enviro-Air Technologies, Inc. was contracted to remove approximately 5600 cubic yards of contaminated soil and sediment from a tidal cove and wetlands area. The wetlands area bordered the cove which was fed by a tidal river (Maurice River, Millville, NJ) and a 4,000 gpm stream. Enviro-Air utilized a portable dam to control the water from the river and rerouted the stream around the cove. The 160 foot mouth of the cove was dammed and the stream was rerouted using over 1500 feet of 12 hard pipe. Seven 6-inch pumps were used to keep the cove dewatered during the excavation activities and two 12-inch pumps were used to divert the stream. Plastic matting was used to create roads into the dewatered cove so the excavating equipment and trucks did not sink into the sandy sediments. Over 5,760,000 gallons per day of water was diverted around the cove and into the river. Over 600,000 gallons of oily water was pumped to a series of tanks where the oil and solid were separated. After the contaminated sediments were removed the wetlands area was restored using over 1,000 native wetlands plants and trees. Koir matting and koir logs were installed to stabilize the cove banks and wetlands area. The entire project was complete in less than 30 days.
