Crushing/Stabilization of Lead Contaminated Soil and Debris
Reading, PA
Project Value: $485,000.
Exide Technologies, Inc. Howard Master-610-921-4001

This project involved working with both the Client and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) to successfully treat approximately 10,000 tons of lead contaminated soil and debris.

Upon completion of a treatability study and approval of the work plan by the PADEP, the soil and debris, with TCLP lead levels exceeding 200 mg/l, were screened to minus 3 inches. The debris, which consisted of battery casings, concrete, rock and steel was then crushed to minus 1 inch utilizing an impact crusher. This "product" was then added to the screened soil. At this time, a portable pug mill equipped with a proportional control system and a belt scale were mobilized to the site. The material was treated in the pug mill using a blend of cement and cement kiln dust and placed in stockpiles for post-treatment testing. After the material cured and passed the post-treatment testing, rendering it non hazardous, it was shipped offsite to a Pennsylvania Subtitle D landfill as daily cover.
