MGP Site Remediation-Excavation Below Groundwater
Project Value: $2.9 million dollars (Fully Bonded) Keith Kowalski-URS Consultants-215-367-2500 Enviro-Air was contracted by a large consulting firm to remediate an MGP site in Conshohocken, PA. The project involved the design and installation of a sheet piling and tieback in an area that utilized 19,000 square feet of steel sheet piling and 65 tie backs. The purpose of the sheet piling was to facilitate excavation of MGP impacted material below the ground water table. The groundwater table was at 8 feet and Enviro-Air had to excavate to 20 feet. Over 16,000 tons of MGP impacted materials were removed, stabilized, transported and thermally treated. In order to contend with the ground water, Enviro-Air designed and built a water treatment plant to support the excavation activities. The treatment plant consisted of a series of 21, 000 gallon settling tanks, a weir tank, 2 oil water separators, 2 bag filter units, a polishing tank, 2 Organo-clay systems, 3 granulated activated carbon systems, a 24 hour flow chart recorder and a digital flow meter. The system was designed to treat up to 175 gallons per minute. The system was fed by various pumps within the excavation areas. The system was operated 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, for 60 days. The treated water was discharged to the local POTW sewer system. The $2.9 million dollar project was completed in 4 months. Over 12,000 man hours were worked with no safety incidents. |
